They did this with potato chips in the US several years ago. Chips used to be sold in 1-lb bags; now they are sold in all sorts of sizes, usually 11-15 oz. A lot of confusion for buyers, many of whom probably don't realize the sizes have changed.
Simon got it right when he said this is just a "scare tactic." This would never happend. The EU isn't remotely interested in imposing the metric system on anyone.

That all happened without any mandate to use the metric system.
